Community Information—Government

Warren County is governed by a five-member Board of Commissioners. The Chairman is selected each year by the other member of the Board and is chief executive officer for the County. The chief administrative officer for the County is an appointed County Manager who conducts the daily affairs of the County. Information about all county departments can be found on the Warren County Government Website.

The Towns of Warrenton, the county seat, Norlina, and Macon are governed by elected Mayors and Boards of Commissioners who appoint Town Managers charged with advancing the affairs of the Towns. Residents elect representation in the NC Legislature in the 22nd and 78th Districts in the House of Representatives, and the 2nd Senate District. Warren County is in NC District 1 for representation in the US House of Representatives.

Taxation

Warren County property tax rates are established yearly on July 1. The current rate is $.84 per $100 valuation. Revaluation occurs every eight years and will be performed again in 2009. Municipal tax rates are established yearly in July. The current rates for Warren County's municipalities are:

  • Warrenton: $.67 per $100 valuation
  • Macon: $.30 per $100 valuation
  • Norlina: $.64 per $100 valuation

Law Enforcement

Law enforcement throughout the County, excluding the incorporated areas of Warrenton and Norlina, is the responsibility of the Warren County Sheriff's Department. The Towns of Warrenton and Norlina also have full-time police departments whose responsibilities include enforcing local ordinances and state statutes within the corporate boundaries of each.

Fire Protection

Warren County has 14 fire departments serving its municipalities and rural fire districts. All districts are rated from class 6 through 9.

Emergency Services

Warren County employs a full-time Emergency Services Coordinator to insure the County's ability to prepare for an mitigate emergency situations and to provide for direct response to (and after) emergency situations. Upon request, the Coordinator is available to assist Warren County businesses and industries in the development of plans to protect life and property on their sites.

Planning/Zoning/Code Enforcement and Environmental Health

The county houses building and electrical inspections and permitting, well and septic permitting, subdivision regulation and zoning agencies in one convenient location. The Towns of Warrenton and Norlina have active planning boards and zoning enforcement personnel.
